Hi friends! Not the most inspiring releases in the temporary assortment this week, but still a good time to introduce you to a wine region I doubt you have explored enough – Finger Lakes Wine District in New York State. If you’re looking for an adventure in the reds I’d check out the Bourgeuil Nuits d'Ivresse, which is Cab Franc at it’s finest. Also want to give a special shout out to Tom Airaksinen and Niklas Laninge, who’s been strong supporters of this newsletters since the very beginning. Cheers! 🍷
Fox Run Riesling – #94173 – 229:-
Finger Lakes in New York is home to some of the most intense Rielsings I’ve ever encountered. This one is no exception, and packed to the brim with elderflower and sweet pears. Drink together with a slightly spicy Pad Thai. 100% Riesling.
La Mateo – #96005 – 219:-
White Rioja is a wine that hits different. It’s oaky, spicy and flowery and while it might take a couple of tries to get it, it’s a battle worth fighting, because once you do you’ll have new secret weapon in your arsenal. Perfect with a Paella when the first rays of spring sunlight hits the muurika. 100% Tempranillo Blanco.

Nerd zone: Finger Lakes
Even though 90-something percent of wines in the US is made on the west coast ( most of that in California), there’s actually great wines to be found in the east too. Finger Lakes Wine Country is one example, a pretty small district in New York state but still the home of over 100 different wine makers. As you can imagine, most of these are pretty small and usually family owned.
The area is of course named after the lakes that spread out like fingers on a map, and similarly to the river in Mosel, these lakes help regulate the temperature. The result is a microclimate that helps grapes ripens while still providing enough diurnal variation (difference between night and day temperatures) to provide wines that are both fresh and complex. The area is most famous for it’s Riesling, but there is some Chardonnay and Gewurtztraminer produced too, and you’d be a fool if you didn’t try some of these wines. Highly recommended stuff!
